When evaluating software, consider these questions...

Does the software company customize for my specific business needs?

It's standard practice to have package control files that allow users to customize software.  However, no two companies are alike and chances are that you will have unique situations that require programming changes to accommodate your business.  Make sure the software company you choose will write the programs or reports and don't forget to ask what it will cost and request a time frame for completion.

What about price and the financial benefits?

The old saying "you get what you pay for" is never more true than in the software industry.  Just because they say it will work, does not mean that it will.  Offering substitute functions instead of giving you what you want shouldn't be acceptable and will only cost you more in the long run.  Make sure you understand what is included in the base price and what is considered as an add-on.

Make sure the software can accommodate any future needs.  It should be able to handle any direction you take (i.e. Local, Broker and Container operations) and integrate smoothly.

Evaluating YOUR business, should be THEIR business.  Selling you a software package should include providing you with an evaluation of the financial benefits that apply to your company.

Fully integrated? We all hate the technical stuff, but...

Information entered in Dispatch should AUTOMATICALLY transfer to Fuel Tax, Freight Billing, Settlements / Payroll and ultimately into the General Ledger. Make sure the software you choose will not require you to purchase  a separate accounting package. Ensure that you will not have to perform any additional steps to move the data into other modules.  Understand the meaning of  fully integrated; don’t assume their meaning is YOUR meaning.

What about customer service and technical support?

You don't have time for employees to remain on "terminal ignore" on the phone waiting for customer service.  Make sure the software company has a professional log system in place to ensure resolution and accountability.  You should be able to receive a tracking number for follow-up.

"OMNI wrote the programs and reports that my business needs, where other companies would not.  It is the BEST trucking software available in its price range and as good or better than other, more expensive software that we checked into.  The customized programs allow us to expand our business without adding employees.  Customer service is prompt and a MASTER at problem solving".
